Title: Family Tree
Post by: davidd_72 on June 21, 2011, 04:24:27 AM
Hi

I'm trying to create my family tree in Visio, started doing it manually but with over 500 people it was going to be a huge job..  I then after some searching noted that there may be an auotmated way to do it using the Org chart section of visio and importing the data from an excel spreadsheet...

Does anyone have any experience with this, is it actually possible..  I have seen a few posts on the net of people saying it works but there seems to be a few probs that I can't find solutions for.  Primarily the fact that with a family tree you don't have a single entity as your superior, you have Mother & father, rather than a single manager..

Any suggestions ideas much apprecaited

thanks
DD

The Org Chart is built on the concept of a single, superior.   :o  As I recall, you have to add a second line, manually, to show the interconnection on the drawing page.   :P  Also, as I recall, it has to be a line, not a connector.   :(  There are a few entries in this forum on family tree related topic, Org Charts with multiple bosses.   ;)

As much as I love Visio, I'm still amazed that people try to use it for family trees.  There are dedicated, more sophisticated, less expensive solutions on the market.   ???
