Reading the features request category I somehow come to notice that most requests can be solved with the standard tools of visio - what is really missing is a tool to bundle all the wonderful "dispersed" solutions uploaded here.
As some how the standard start configuration file is limited to a choice of icons, I would not mind starting with a template that sets some zoom centering functionality (http://visguy.com/vgforum/index.php?topic=1777.0) or anchor features to drawn shapes (http://visguy.com/vgforum/index.php?topic=1066.0),that setups a pages hierarchy view (http://visguy.com/vgforum/index.php?topic=1665.msg7219#msg7219) ... and so on.
