Title: Visio versions
Post by: Michelle on September 08, 2011, 07:41:59 PM
Can I run Visio 2007 and 2010 on the same computer?  I have a need to update to Visio 2010, but I also need to keep 2007 available to be able to answer our end user's questions (most of whom have 2007.).

Thanks!
Michelle

Have a look at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/)
or one of the other virtual machines available, e.g. VMware.

I can confirm that you can install both Visio 2007 and Visio 2010 on the same machine and use whichever one you want when needed. Having written  that,  there is one behavior you will likely encounter which you may be irritating: what I noticed was that everytime I was using Visio 2007 and then decided to launch Visio 2010 - there was an extra delay as Visio 2010 launch its setup UI claiming it needed  to "install" itself. This took not long - perhaps 15 seconds. And likewise after using Visio 2010 I decided to launch Visio 2007, the Visio 2007 application would do the same thing. I was never able to figure out if I could avoid this "install" message. Som depending on how often you switch you might find this behavior irritating.  Ultimately it was more useful in my case to install Visio 2007 in a virtual machine.

Similar behavior if you have V2003 and V2007 and switch between them.  Not tried the virtual machine approach, so, don't know if that would avoid having to "re-install" every time you switch versions.
