Tagging Elements in a Diagram to Appear / Disappear

I have searched to no avail, possibly because I am asking the wrong question.

What I would like to do:

I have drawn a large diagram.

I would like to tag elements of this diagram as 'group a' say, another set as 'group b', and to then be able to say 'just show me group a' and have all the other elements disappear.

Is this possible? Is this a function of visio?

Layers are what you need to look at. Any shape may be added to one or more layers and layers may be made visible/invisible and printing enabled/disabled.
