Title: Using VISIO for wiring diagrams
Post by: ThirdDimension on September 30, 2015, 11:36:41 PM
I am branching out (AGAIN) and requesting help.

I would like to start using VISIO to design electrical interface wiring diagrams.

My question is if anyone is currently doing this?

I know that VISIO offers templates for electrical engineering with a helpful palate of stencils to pull from, and I can certainly use some of the symbols for my drawings.

I will be mainly by developing aircraft interface drawings to support the installation of new avionic equipment.  These drawings will mainly consist of wires going from one box to another, but will also include some circuit breakers, diodes, and grounds, etc.  I should have no problem designing new stencils for these.

What I already see I will need help on is proper ways to attach wires to connectors on the drawings, so if I need to move a connector on the page, the wiring, pinout, etc. will move with the movement of the connector.  Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Gluing keeps things attached.  Dynamic connectors are typically used, but, their routing is less than predictable.  Using regular line tool is more predictable, but much more tedious.

You might want to check out the following posts:

Schematic diagram scheme:  http://visguy.com/vgforum/index.php?topic=6314.0 (http://visguy.com/vgforum/index.php?topic=6314.0).  This provides a lot of functionality... showing if things are properly connected.  Not sure if anyone has seriously tried it though.

Paul Herber has a couple of boat loads of schematic symbols that go beyond the standard fare that Visio offers.
