I've been procrastinating learning to use styles. Now it's time to bite the bullet. Can anyone point me to a good tutorial?

I'd like to learn how to

  • Create new styles from scratch
  • Create a style from a shape I have already created
  • Add styles in templates
  • Attach templates to documents
Thanks

If I were you I'd procrastinate permanently, styles are no longer used (or at least, not the preferred way of doing things) in Visio. Themes are the way to go. If you still want to learn styles then just Google for Visio styles, you'll find loads of stuff about your first three bullet points. Not the fourth though, templates cannot be attached to documents, templates are document starting points.

OK, glad I asked.

Here's what I want to do right now. I have some graphic images that I need to annotate. I find that I keep using the same shapes over and over again. One example is an oval that I use to highlight a particular part of the image and a callout to point to that oval. The oval and the callout have a particular line color and weight. I'd like a way to "save" those settings so that if I find that I want the lines thicker or a different color, I can change the settings in one place and have them applied to all of the shaped already placed.

Then I'd like to store those setting somewhere so that I can get at them in other documents.

What do I need to study up on to do that?

Hello Jennifer,

What version of Visio are you using?

Best regards

Visio 2003. I bought a copy of 2010, but I'm waiting to install it until this project is over.

PS: The version I am using is in my signature.

Ah, Win XP Pro, in years to come we'll look back and say, yes, that was the last decent version, it was all downhill from there on.

Quite a lot of people are saying that right now and have been since Vista. Maybe the new MSFT CEO will be able to get it together. Balmer was a disaster.
