Shape Data Manipulation via ActiveX Controls

I am looking to control shape data by clicking on a control. Ideally, a user can click on a shape (or a control on a shape), and the shapes' data will toggle through 3 values. I was looking at the ActiveX controls, but couldn't determine how to link the to a shape, or it's data.

Visio semi-noob here, looking for a push in the right direction.
